Sharon Tate is best known as the wife of actor and filmmaker, Roman Polanski. Sharon Tate was a socialite and actress who appeared in films such as Valley of the Dolls, The Last Picture Show, and Thunderbirds. On August 9th, 1969, Tate was murdered by members of a Charles Manson cult at her home at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles. It is the most well-known crime to have occurred at that address. On August 10th, 1969, a few days after Tate's murder, Polanski surrendered to the Los Angeles Police Department regarding the murder of his pregnant wife. On August 23rd, he turned himself in on a fugitive warrant from authorities in Switzerland. In September 1969, Polanski was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty to four felony counts of first-degree murder that could have resulted in life imprisonment. Polanski had been questioned as a suspect from the preliminary investigation from his wife's death but had been unable to help investigators at that time. The trial would begin on Tuesday August 15th of 1970 and would last for four weeks until a verdict was reached post-trial. The judge presiding over the case, Judge Laurence J. Rittenband, would prove to be somewhat of a questionable guardian for Polanski. For example, the judge threatened to have Mr. Polanski committed to a mental institution on two separate occasions. The first time would be after an alleged visit that Polanski made with his attorney to the judge's home in Malibu after pleading not guilty. During this visit which was confirmed by both parties, Mr. Polanski confronted the judge about the grave danger his wife and friends were in during their time at 10050 Cielo Drive and pleaded with him to make certain that they were protected. The judge brushed this off and never acknowledged it until much later despite demands from Mr. Polanski and his legal team . The second time would be after the judge denied bail for Mr. Polanski which would have created a vigil by his friends. The judge threatened to have Mr. Polanski placed in an institution if he did not give up on his claim of innocence. On August 13th, 1969, Sharon Tate along with four others were brutally killed while she was pregnant at her home near Beverly Hills. Tate's friends were initially blamed for the murders due to the fact that they had been driving through the area at the time of her murder thinking that they would be able to pay a visit on Tate while she was resting in bed on the night of her murder . The friends, actor Jay Sebring, hair stylist and friend of Tate's, Abigail Folger, and Wojciech Frykowski, a friend of Frykowski's , as well as Steven Parent visited the home . The maid was tending to the needs of Tate's husband at the time. In another bizarre twist to this case, Tate's two dogs were also found killed on the scene with knife wounds that had been inflicted by unknown assailants. It is likely that these murders were committed due to the protection request made by Polanski to Judge Rittenband , which ultimately was not fulfilled. https://www.nytimes. cfa1e77820
