Devdas (Hindi: देवदास) is a 2002 Indian Sanskrit film adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novel Devdas, written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also composed its soundtrack. It stars Shahrukh Khan as Devdas, Aishwarya Rai as Paro (Parvati), and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi.The movie opens with a scene showing the state of depression in which Devdas is due to his failed love life. He is constantly drunk, his house is in ruins and he has lost all that he had previously possessed (land, money etc.). His father says that he needs to find a wife soon, or else he will be disowned. Devdas tells his father that he will find a wife. The story then moves to the city of Varanasi, where Devdas is introduced as an archetypal Indian man, who lives for himself. Despite his well-intentioned love for his mother, he does not follow her advice towards girls he meets, because she is old-fashioned in her ideas. He instead prefers the company of boys and tries to impress them with his dance skills. However, he fails to succeed in doing this until one day when Kalidasa (Jetpur Navin) comes up to him and suggests that he should find a girl who can "make you happy all the time". Devdas then meets Parvati (Aishwarya Rai), a girl of fourteen years as she is working as a maid in the house of Durga Prasad (Sanjay Suri). Despite Devdas' initial reluctance to talk to her, she becomes interested and they start chatting with each other. The two first meet when Devdas waits at the gate of Parvati's house and silently watches her on the balcony. She becomes aware of this; their first meeting takes place outside on the street. Soon after, they become frequent visitors to each other's houses, and start talking on telephone regularly. Devdas finally approaches her on the streets of Varanasi, asking her to dance with him. He tells Parvati that he is looking for a wife and Parvati says that she can marry him. However, Parvati says she will only marry him if he swears never to fall in love with anyone else. Devdas agrees to this condition. Devdas' life becomes happy after his marriage, but he soon realizes that Parvati is not able to satisfy his needs for someone who need him all the time. He meets an old man named Mahendra (Raj Babbar) who advises him to forget his wife and continue on loving her, while finding new women for himself whenever he required them. cfa1e77820
