After the 1979 Revolution, however, Iran experienced a period of decline in its film industry. Many filmmakers and actors fled the country due to change in social and political conditions. Since 1997, however, there has been a resurgence in national cinema with movies such as Children of Heaven winning Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The rise of the Iranian film industry can be attributed to the influence of Iranian filmmakers who were educated in Europe, mostly in France. Some of these filmmakers, such as Ebrahim Hatami, whom was a student at the University of Freiburg's School for Cinematography, returned to Iran only to realize the colossal effect of cinema on these citizens. Many ideas that they brought back with them were used by other Iranians in order to help further their own education and careers. The following are the different names that the Iranian film industry has taken. The Early years of the Iranian film industry are marked with short films that often consisted of either news or propaganda. Films were put out by government agencies or by private companies, especially film studios. However, movies were not distributed to the public at first because they were only viewable in private houses. This was for two reasons: Firstly, there was no funding for cinema studios at this time due to pressure from other parties, meaning that if the state shows a movie then other parties will try and profit off of it.
